Tennessee's proposed bill targets illegal immigration and gang crime, seeking to align state efforts with federal deportation priorities.
With the new Trump administration prioritizing a crackdown on illegal immigration and rising crime rates, Tennessee lawmakers are taking bold steps to address the problem head-on. State Representative Todd Warner (R-Chapel Hill, D92) has introduced the "Tennessee Illegal Immigration Act" (HB0010), aimed at streamlining cooperation with federal immigration authorities and curbing the activities of transnational gangs exploiting the porous southern border.
The legislation mandates that Tennessee law enforcement agencies request immigration detainers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when an individual in custody is found to be in the country illegally.
According to the TN Legislative website: HB0010 “ Immigration - As introduced, requires a law enforcement agency in custody of an individual unlawfully present in the United States to request an immigration detainer and detain such individual for the maximum period as specified in the detainer; requires such agency to transport such individuals not taken into federal custody to a sanctuary city; requires department of revenue to request reimbursement for costs of detention and transportation of illegal aliens and to withhold federal petroleum taxes collected in this state if such reimbursement is not received. - Amends TCA Title 4; Title 7; Title 38; Title 39; Title 55 and Title 67.”
