Throwing Everything at the Wall: The Last Gasp of the Williamson County Establishment

The establishment is losing its grip, and they know it. After years of grassroots victories flipping GOP leadership, school boards, and commissions, they’re now contesting the Williamson County GOP reorg—not on merit, but out of desperation. Their time is up.

The grassroots takeover of the Williamson County Republican Party (WCRP) Reorganization Convention on March 4, 2025, was not just a victory—it was a culmination of years of effort to break the grip of the establishment on Tennessee’s GOP. But rather than accepting their loss, establishment Republicans are doing what they always do when the grassroots beats them: they’re crying foul, demanding a do-over, and throwing out every available accusation they can to see what sticks.

This contest is not based on credible allegations of election interference or disenfranchisement—it is a last-ditch effort by an old guard that has been losing ground for years and now sees its influence slipping away entirely.

The Long Road to Grassroots Victory

For decades, Tennessee’s Republican supermajority has been led by establishment figures who claim conservative values but govern like moderates. That illusion was shattered by the rise of grassroots movements in Williamson County, groups like:

  • Tennessee Stands
  • Moms for Liberty Williamson County Chapter
  • Williamson Families

These organizations didn’t just challenge the establishment—they exposed them. The GOP’s cozy, backroom deals and resistance to actual conservative reforms weren’t just campaign issues anymore—they were laid bare for all to see.

That wake-up call sparked a wave of grassroots victories that fundamentally reshaped Williamson County politics:

✅ County Commission Wins: Grassroots-backed candidates Christopher Richards, Mary Smith, Lisa Hayes, Drew Torres, and Barb Sturgeon and Bill Petty won their races, replacing entrenched establishment Republicans. Richards’ victory was particularly telling—after initially losing by 11 votes, he won a caucus-style special election when the original winner, Bert Chalfant, unexpectedly passed away before being sworn in. And Petty's victory came when the current GOP board ensured that District 10 Republican voters would have a say in who represents them, by hosting a special voting convention where Petty beat "incumbent" Cheryl Brown 2-1, with 300 voters in attendance.

Side note, Chair candidate of the losing Williamson County Conservatives slate, and D12 County Commissioner Brian Clifford, voted to simply appoint Brown to the D10 seat circumventing the will of the people.

✅ Nearly Defeating a 16-Year Incumbent: In 2022, grassroots leader and Executive Director of Tennessee Stands Gary Humble came within striking distance of unseating Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, a longtime establishment figure. The near-upset sent shockwaves through Tennessee’s political class. But for the 1200 crossover Democrat votes for Johnson, Gary Humble would have been the clear victor, as the loss for him was at just under 800 votes.

✅ Sheriff and Judicial Victories: Grassroots-backed Jeff Hughes won his primary race for Williamson County Sheriff, as did David Veile who secured his seat as 21st District Circuit Court Judge—both key wins in reasserting conservative values in local government.

✅ Flipping the Williamson County GOP: In 2023, grassroots conservatives took complete control of the WCRP, defeating the establishment slate by a 2-to-1 margin for the chair election, and all other seats flipping at a 3-1 margin, in the largest county party reorganization in state history—until this year’s election, which shattered that record.

✅ Transforming the School Board: In 2024, half of the school board retired rather than face grassroots-backed challengers in newly partisan races—a change that was only possible because of grassroots activism

Most notably, Jen Aprea who was forced to run as an independent not only because she had voted for Democrats and was ineligible to run as a Republican, but also due to her staunchly progressive voting record as a school board member—supporting extended school closures and student masking during COVID, voting to keep obscene books in school libraries, and backing CRT-influenced curriculum in the district was defeated by Republican challenger Margie Johnson, leading to a major conservative shift in the make up of the board. .

And now, the 2025 Williamson County GOP reorganization was yet another massive win for the grassroots, with a record-breaking turnout and a clear victory—despite the establishment throwing everything they had into the race:
🚨 Big money from donors
🚨 Powerful endorsements from entrenched political figures
🚨 A professionalized campaign that would make James Carville proud
🚨 An aggressive mailer and digital campaign against grassroots leaders

And yet, they still lost.

Which, considering the lack of applause in the room when their speeches were being made, should have been a sign for them to READ THE ROOM. Not even having Governor Lee and his wife Maria sitting in the front row were enough to push the election their way.

Now They Want to Throw Out 1,500 Republican Votes

The establishment could not buy their way to victory, so they are trying to litigate their way to victory instead. Their contest seeks to disenfranchise over 1,500 Republican voters—not because of election fraud, but because the election didn’t go the way they wanted.

There is no evidence that this contest meets the high bar necessary for nullifying an election. The Tennessee Republican Party (TRP) worked directly with the WCRP throughout the process, ensuring that it was conducted in accordance with state party bylaws and under the oversight of TRP Chairman Scott Golden and his team.

Contests Like This Almost Never Succeed—And This One Likely Won’t Either

Contests like these are historically unsuccessful because overturning an election is an extreme action that requires indisputable proof of fraud, disenfranchisement, or intentional election-rigging—not just procedural complaints or sour grapes from the losing side.

The establishment knows this contest will fail. But their real goal isn’t to overturn the election—it’s to sow chaos, drain grassroots resources, and weaken the new leadership before they even begin their work.

The Establishment’s Last Gasp

The writing is on the wall. They’ve lost. Their power is fading. Their influence is collapsing.

This contest isn’t about election integrity. It’s about power and control.

And Williamson County grassroots conservatives aren’t buying it.

Of course, they’re going to attack. Of course, they’re contesting—because that’s all they have left. These are the same establishment elites who spent years mocking, sidelining, and undermining grassroots conservatives, thinking they’d never lose their grip on power. And yet, here we are, flipping county commissions, school boards, GOP leadership, and even threatening longtime incumbents in races they once thought were untouchable. They’re groaning because the political machine they’ve controlled for decades is slipping through their fingers.

And instead of accepting the will of the voters, they’re throwing a tantrum, crying foul, and demanding a do-over. But we see it for what it is—desperation. And the more they whine, the more obvious it becomes: their time is up.

What Happens Next?

The Tennessee Republican Party will review the contest but given that the election was conducted with full compliance to party bylaws, it is almost certain that the results will likely stand.

The grassroots revolution in Tennessee is here to stay, and no amount of political theater, dark money, or desperate legal maneuvers will change that.
