Color Me Verified: Tennessee’s Bold Plan to Guard Resources & Possibly Elections from Illegal Immigrants

Tennessee's bold new bill aims to secure elections and state resources by introducing color-coded driver’s licenses to distinguish citizens from non-citizens. Supporters say it boosts efficiency, while critics warn of discrimination and unnecessary confusion.

A new bill introduced in Tennessee by Rep. Scott Cepicky (R-Culleoka) seeks to improve the integrity of government systems and as a side benefit, secure the electoral process, by distinguishing U.S. citizens from non-citizens through differently colored driver’s licenses. House Bill 11 would allow citizens to voluntarily provide proof of citizenship, ensuring more efficient verification for programs like E-Verify and government services such as TennCare.

HB011 “As introduced, requires the department of safety to redesign driver licenses, instruction permits, intermediate driver licenses, and photo identification cards issued to lawful permanent residents of the United States, and temporary driver licenses and permits and temporary photo identification licenses issued to qualified noncitizens, so that the licenses and permits may be easily distinguished from driver and photo identification licenses issued to residents of this state who are United States citizens. - Amends TCA Title 55, Chapter 50.”
